In major crimes, the accused shall personally appear before the court, without prejudice to his right to seek legal assistance. If the accused cannot afford appointing an attorney, he may request the court to appoint one for his defense at the expense of the State in accordance with the regulations. As for other crimes, the accused may be represented by an agent or an attorney. In all cases, the court may order the accused to appear before it in person.
